Highland Fling - Scotland

This is the oldest of the traditional dances of Scotland and is a dance of joy performed at the end of a victorious battle. It was danced by male warriors over a small round shield, called a Targe, that the warriors carried into battle. Most Targes had a sharp spike of steel projecting from the centre, so dancers learned early to move with great skill and dexterity. The Highland Fling is danced on the spot, and is said to be based on the antics of a stag on a hillside; the grouped fingers and upheld arms representing the antlers.

About the project

Aims:

To share culture and diversity with many European countries. To learn about own culture through dance and then to teach the dance to another country and in doing so learn to perform and appreciate.

Work process:

In September each country will learn a traditional dance of their country. By the end of November each country will hang the video of their dance on a blog. In December, through video conference, each country will be given one country and they have to learn that country´s dance. By May each country should hang the learnt dance´s video to be voted.

Expected results:

Different classes from each school will choose a dance to perform. They will research the appropriate music and make costumes. In May 2012 there will be a competition 'Let's Dance' and a panel of judges made up of pupils from each country will vote on the best learned dance.
